Smithsonian American Art Museum Celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year on Janruary 24, from 1 to 4 pm

Celebrate the Year of the Ox with a lion dance parade, performances by the Fairfax Chinese Dance Troupe and traditional martial arts. Calligraphy demonstration and make red paper lanterns at Smithsonian American Art Museum. 8th & and F streets NW.

Lunar New Year Parade, Year of the Ox on Sunday, Feburary 1, 2009 from 2 to 5 pm

The Chinese Community of the Greater Washington Metropolitan area is going to celebrate the "Chinese Lunar New Year" in Washington, DC Chinatown on H & I Streets, NW, between 6th and 8th Streets. Lunar Year Open Ceremony at 12 noon on Jan. 24 at the Lakeforest Mall, Gaithersburg, MD

Experience the rich culture of the Chinese Lunar New Year at Lakeforest! View beautiful decorations and exhibits January 24 - February 9. Opening Ceremony is Saturday, February 1st at 12 p.m.
Entertainment and activities will take place over two weekends. Live entertainment at Center Court includes traditional lion and dragon dances, folk dances and martial arts demonstrations. 5th Annual Lunar New Year Celebration on Feb. 14 & 15 in Fair Oaks Mall, Fairfax, VA

Fair Oaks will be ushering in the Lunar New Year with costumed dragons and lions, music, dancing, lantern displays, Kung Fu demonstrations, kids crafts, and more, representing a total of 10 countries. Montgomery County Public Libraries Host Lunar New Year Celebrations from January 17 to February 21, 2009

Local Public Libraries Host Lunar New Year Celebrations

Montgomery County Public Libraries will welcome the Year of the Ox with a variety of programs in January and February marking the New Lunar Year 4707.

Music, dance and special performances will feature the sights, sounds and culture of China and Japan. Programs will include introduction to customs behind the Lunar New Year, traditional dances, hands-on art activities, storytelling, shadow puppet shows and martial arts demonstrations including tai-chi and kung fu, calligraphy, crafts, customs, Chinese yo-yo, workshops and children’s activities, topped off with the traditional Chinese lion dance to chase away evil and usher in a year of good luck.

Lunar New Year, which starts with the new moon on the first day of the New Year and ends on the full moon 15 days later, falls this year on January 26. It is an important celebration in the Asian culture.
