Summary of Chinatown Walk-Through on October 16, 2007

At 10 am of Tuesday, October 16, we, the Chinatown Walk-Through Team members from the City and the community organizations started gathering on the pedestrian sidewalk at the corner of 6th and I (Eye) Streets.

Around 10:15 am, we started assembling the team in the Chinatown Park (a bow-tie park between 6th Street, Massachusetts Ave. and I Street).  Fortunately, we were blessed with a perfect weather condition - a sunny blue sky with gentle breeze of fresh air.

With about thirty (30) strong members in attendance, I, as the lead community organizer for this Chinatown Walk-Through, kicked off the Walk with a brief welcome address and an introduction of representatives from all participating agencies and organizations.  Then, Hiram Brewton, the City’s designated Chinatown Walk-Through coordinator of Mayor’s Office of Community Relations and Services (MOCRS), briefed about the general Walk-Through strategy and objectives.  While exchanging ideas and expectations for this walk-through, we were handing out an issue list identified during the pre-walkthrough by the civic leaders to be used as a point of reference.

Finally, we are extremely grateful for the patience and cooperation of business owners and residents.  But, most of all, we must thank all the members who set aside the time to participate in this important Walk-Through for the improvement of the Chinatown neighborhood.  This experience is arguably one of the most thorough and collaborative neighborhood walks we have ever had.  Although many of the issues won’t be resolved overnight, we have successfully communicated with the Chinatown community that the City and many civic organizations are genuinely working together to ensure a safer and better Chinatown and near-by neighborhoods.

Our special acknowledgement for the following members: (If we miss/error anyone, please let us know)

Rev. Koo, Jeanny Ho, Hiram Brewton II, Simone Green, Alice Luk, James Wang, Terry Lynch, Miles Grove, Max Brown, Daniel Conner, Hiram Brewton I, Raymond Ho, Raymond Wong, Wing Woo, T.E.
